Be happy.
Be happy.
After a challenging couple of weeks (I’ve had some annoying health issues, and I spent Thanksgiving night sick and away from my family), I realized how important it is to gain from a little bit of perspective.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that today, I stumbled upon this LIVESTRONG blog post from a few months back, before our team’s departure for Kilimanjaro. When asked about my summit, I answered that I want to “keep challenging myself in ways that I can continue to give back and grow as a person.”
And when writing about what LIVESTRONG means to me, well, let’s just say I needed this lesson today: “[it means] being empowered to: be proactive and take action in one’s life; to keep going when the going gets tough; and to tackle each and every day with a combination of grit and grace.”
So even during rough times, I just need to remind myself to hang in there, recognize that I’ve got it really good, and keep moving forward. I wasn’t feeling very thankful on Thanksgiving, but I sure am now.
Dr. Mariana Dieste Mead’s advice for cancer survivors: “challenge yourself to look at our world, and ask: ‘What can I do during my lifetime to leave the world a better place.’” Mead passed away in 2002 from pancreatic cancer, but her legacy endures through her profound words. Jane Lynch’s Smith College commencement speech is awesome. She shares great advice about accepting the scary or uncomfortable parts of life. Says Lynch: “My advice to you: live in the moment. Stay fluid and roll with those changes. Life is just a big extended improvisation. Embrace the ever changing, ever evolving world with the best rule I’ve ever found: ‘YES AND.’ Accept the world for what it is and make it your own.”
Heartfelt advice on meaningful things to say and do when a loved one is diagnosed with cancer. My favorite is #9: “Get involved in the cause.” Count me in.
